Roanoke is a multicultural metropolitan area of over 300,000, located at the southern tip of Virginia's spectacular Shenandoah Valley, surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the stunning 22,000-acre Smith Mountain Lake. The area offers exceptional outdoor activities but also extensive sports and cultural activities from fine dining, to multiple musical venues and playhouses, to symphonies, opera and ballets. Access to major air travel hubs is convenient through the Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport. The weather features mild winters, an abundance of sunshine, and extended spring and autumn seasons. The region features highly ranked schools and universities and has been coined “the best kept secret in the east.”

The Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine is a strong and growing presence in regional healthcare. Our Department is based in Roanoke Virginia and has clinical, educational, and research sites throughout the region. Our Faculty are based in Roanoke at the Carilion Clinic (a Top 100 Hospital), in Radford at the Carilion New River Valley Hospital, at the Salem VAMC, and at the Catawba Hospital. We are part of the VTC School of Medicine, one of the newest and most innovative medical schools in the nation. We work closely with the VTC Research Institute, headed by the neuroscientist Michael Friedlander PhD, that has over $70 Million of current funding. The Department is focused on the extensive development and implementation of patient-centered research utilizing measurement-based care.

About the Roanoke Valley

The Roanoke Valley is a metro area of 300,000 and has consistently been rated among the “best places to live” in the nation and features exceptional schools, low cost of living, inexpensive real estate, and abundant outdoor activities in an exceptional setting along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, Smith Mountain Lake, and surrounding areas.

The Roanoke Valley was named one of the ten most bike-friendly areas in the United States by USA Today Travel and our mountain biking has been featured by internationally known outlets such as Pinkbike, Singletracks, Men's Journal, and Mpora. The popular Carvins Cove is regarded as a bucket list trail system for mountain bikers from around the world.

Interested in hiking? Roanoke is the largest city on the Appalachian Trail, and the local trio of Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs has become collectively known as the Triple Crown of Virginia - showcasing three of the most beautiful summits of the A.T.

The region is home to the Blue Ridge Parkway, regarded as "America's Favorite Drive" because of its spectacular beauty, Smith Mountain Lake - the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge," and four amazing Virginia State Parks.

Located at the southern tip of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, easy interstate access allows for driving distance to the Atlantic Ocean beaches and major metropolitan areas.
