Job Expectations:

  • Dedicated to serving WNC Birth Center patients with a helpful, friendly, and respectful attitude and with a “patient first” commitment.
  • Willing to work on tasks outside of this job description or department in order to accomplish the goals of the practice.
  • Respects fellow employees by treating them with courtesy.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Competency in the practice of nurse-midwifery within the limits of the specialty. Acceptance of several principles of community health care including, but not limited to the following: Commitment to serve patients regardless of their ability to pay and commitment to practices of health promotion and disease prevention.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Provides clinical care to maternity and gynecology patients within the scope of a full-service nurse-midwifery program and the protocols for practice.
  • Maintains compliance with ACNM, AABC, and all state and federal laws and regulations. Practices according to policy and procedures required by the NC Board of Nursing.
  • Contributes to maintaining productive and positive working relationships with physician consultants, midwives, care providers, and other staff at WNCBC and other health care facilities.
  • Participates in selected local, state, and national organizations that affect nurse-midwifery practice (ACNM, NCACNM, and AABC).
  • Ability to communicate well both orally, electronically, and written with staff and patients.
  • Able to work well in stressful situations with all types of patients.
  • Provides direct patient care according to approved policy and procedures.
  • Provides educational, emotional, and physical support to patients and families.
  • Maintains an effective communication link with patients, families, and staff.
  • Works collaboratively with outside agencies to provide care to patients. Is familiar with referral agencies and their services.
  • Takes on-call shifts as requested and is available to work on 30-minute notice.
  • Attends weekly chart review and monthly staff meetings.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as needed or requested by supervisor.
  • Completes yearly continuing education requirements to maintain licensure, and provide supervisor with a copy of up to date license.
  • Follows all policies and procedures in the WNC Birth Center Policy & Procedure Manual.
  • Performs other tasks as directed by the supervisor.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of North Carolina.
  • Current approval to practice as a Certified Nurse midwife in the State of North Carolina.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience in maternal/child health, labor and delivery, and neonatal care.
  • Previous experience in a birth center setting desirable.
  • Current neonatal and adult CPR certification.
