Job Summary:

Join a team of dedicated Laboratory Animal Professionals in supporting cutting edge medical research at one of the nation's premier medical institutions. Successful applicants will learn and apply technical animal husbandry skills to care for a diverse range of animals, with regular guidance and mentoring. Operates within a structured animal care and use program with established procedures and in compliance with existing local, state and federal regulations.

Schedule Requirements:

  • Work Shift - 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, weekends and holidays required

Key Elements/ Responsibilities:

  • Completes daily assessment of animal health, welfare, and housing conditions.
  • Provides routine care of research animals.
  • Participates in the cleaning and maintenance of animal quarters.
  • Maintains adequate levels of consumable supplies in animal quarters.
  • Learns how to monitor environmental parameters in animal housing rooms, document findings and report deviations from defined acceptable ranges.
  • Accurately documents completed daily activities in accordance with established procedures.
  • Learns how to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot animal housing and water delivery systems.
  • Develops ability to recognize and report potential clinical abnormalities and/or irregularities in laboratory animals.
  • Learns and adheres to the regulatory requirements for the care and use of laboratory animals.
  • Learns and complies with established departmental and institutional operational procedures for the care of laboratory animals.
  • Learns and applies established administrative, safety and compliance procedures when working with laboratory animals.



TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:

COMMUNICATION (NOVICE): Clearly, effectively and respectfully communicates to employees or customers.

CUSTOMER SERVICE (NOVICE): A continuing focus on the needs and requirements of customers, anticipating their needs, remaining sensitive to customers while performing services for them, responsive to customer needs.

JUDGEMENT AND DECISION-MAKING (FUNDAMENTAL AWARENESS):Able to make decisions effectively and accurately in an environment which may be fast-paced or changing. Considers a wide range of alternatives, including those which may fall outside of the scope of the task at hand, before making a decision.

PLANNING (FUNDAMENTAL AWARENESS): Plans work to complete projects on time. Competently handles multiple assignments simultaneously. Able to be flexible to meet changing customer needs with minimal disruption and loss of productivity. Uses time efficiently.

ANIMAL CARE KNOWLEDGE (NOVICE): Knowledgeable on the needs, treatment, and husbandry for different animal species. Able to ensure their welfare, nutrition, and safety.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE (FUNDAMENTAL AWARENESS): Demonstrates knowledge of the appropriate rules and regulations and apply them in difficult, stressful and complex situations. Able to interpret and explain rules and regulations that are ambiguous or unclear. Directs others in interpreting rules and regulations on the job and trains others in them.

LABORATORY ANIMAL DISEASES (FUNDAMENTAL AWARENESS): Knowledge of and experience with laboratory animal diseases, outbreaks, methods of spread, and methods of limiting disease.
