PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide safe and effective psychological care to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center patients and families. Follows care standards, guidelines, and treatment protocols for infant, child, adolescent and adult patients and families, and aids in their mental and physical growth and development. Participates in all Department and Division activities and initiatives. Maintains good standing in the Department.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Care: Perform direct patient care of pediatric and adult patients and their family members, within the scope of the Psychology license, education, and experience. Participate in safe, effective, and compassionate patient- and family-centered care, commensurate with their level of advancement and responsibility. Interview and assess patients to determine presence of condition/disease and to establish preventive behavioral and mental health practices. Determine nature and extent of impairment, and prescribe and provide appropriate behavioral or mental health interventions, treatments, or assessments. Perform procedures, collect and analyze data, and make decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, care, referral, re-assessment, and discontinuation of care. May formulate, maintain, support, monitor, and modify a patient-specific plan for care, treatment and rehabilitation based on clinical assessment.

Specific Patient Populations: Cincinnati Children's Center for Heart Disease and Mental Health is opening of a new, integrated model of mental health care in childhood heart disease. This new clinical service will operate alongside our comprehensive research program and will provide inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth-based psychological services for infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) and their families. The successful candidate will deliver evidence-based psychological screening, assessment, intervention, treatment, and psycho-educational services to:
  • Families of fetuses diagnosed with CHD,
  • Children and adolescents of all ages with CHD and their families, and
  • Adults with CHD.

The role includes program development and co-design of innovative approaches to delivering mental health care embedded within the context of cardiac care. Our cardiac psychology team works under the leadership of our Center Director and alongside a high-performing multidisciplinary team of cardiac care providers, our dedicated social worker, child life specialist, and clinic coordinator.

Effective Communication: Provide for the exchange of appropriate patient care and clinical information when patients are admitted, referred, transferred, or discharged. Provide data which will contribute to the assessment of a patient's or family's needs, the organization's capability to provide care or treatment, and the appropriate level of care.

Development of Clinical Excellence: Actively participates in Department/Division and system learner training and educational programs. Maintains currency in field through continuing education, literature, and seminars.

Policy Compliance: Maintains good standing in the Department by compliance to licensure and credentialing criteria. Complies with policies and procedures protecting patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. Follow Cincinnati Children's established code of ethical behavior in decisions and actions regarding marketing, admission, transfer, discharge, and billing. Review timeliness, accuracy, availability, and security of information.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associate Professor Required:
  • Doctor of Philosophy OR Doctor of Psychology OR Equivalent Degree from an AAP acredited program.
  • Unrestricted licensed or license-eligible Psychologist in the State of Ohio.
  • Post-doctroal training and expereince with desired clinical populaitons
  • Willingness to apply for licensure in the state of Kentucky, West Virginia, or Indiana.
  • Approval/credentialing from CCHMC Medical Staff Services Division
  • Completion of all required pre-employment activities (screening, background check, badging and orientation)

Assistant Professor Required:
  • Doctor of Philosophy OR Doctor of Psychology OR Equivalent Degree from an APA accredited program.
  • Unrestricted licensed or license-eligible Psychologist in the State of Ohio.
  • Post-doctroal training and expereince with desired clinical populaitons
  • Willingness to apply for licensure in the state of Kentucky, West Virginia, or Indiana.
  • Approval/credentialing from CCHMC Medical Staff Services Division.
  • Completion of all required pre-employment activities (screening, background check, badging and orientation)

Unique Skills:
  • Developmental Care: Knowledge of human growth and development, and skills in the delivery of practices and evidence-based interventions to support healthy physical, emotional, behavioral, social, and cognitive development.
  • Family-Centered Care: Understands and supports family-centered care.
  • Trauma-Informed Care: Understands and supports trauma-informed care.
  • Clinical Knowledge: Professional knowledge and clinical ability sufficient to provide evaluation and treatment of patients and families affected by critical and complex chronic medical illness, including congenital heart disease.
  • Diversity Appreciation: Understanding and showing respect and appreciation for the uniqueness of all individuals, leveraging differences in others' perspectives and ideas, appreciating cultural differences, and adjusting one's approach to successfully integrate with others who are different from oneself.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Clinical Care Skills: Demonstrate skills in psychosocial screening, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions and treatments.
