POSITION TITLE: Executive Co-Director, Heart Institute; Chief of Pediatric Cardiology

SUPERVISOR'S TITLE: BK Rachford Professor & Chair of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati, Director, Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation and Chief Medical Officer, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS: Senior Leadership, In-Chiefs, Institute and Division Directors

PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide leadership for a world-leading multidisciplinary team that provides the highest level of clinical care for children and adults with congenital heart disease. To build upon the strengths and successes of the Heart Institute while executing a vision that continues to push the boundaries of clinical pediatric cardiology and research. Commitment to excellent teaching, exceptional mentoring, and personal guidance to produce the next generation of pediatric cardiologists to become scholarly thinkers and critical investigators within the cardiology community.

REQUIRED: The Executive Co-Director and Chief of Pediatric Cardiology must be a national and/or international leader in the field of pediatric cardiology with comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of pediatric cardiology, clinical, translational, and basic research programs, clinical fellowship programs and community organization. Experience working in an interdisciplinary setting, medical clinic facilities involving a culturally diverse population, academic university teaching, research, grantsmanship, and publications is a must. Prior experience in a complex academic medical setting.

Qualifications

QULIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • M.D./D.O. degree or equivalent from an accredited medical school with at least ten years post-pediatric residency and fellowship in cardiology or immediately similar field
  • Unrestricted medical license and ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) board certified in pediatric cardiology
  • Distinguished nationally and/or internationally recognized leader in pediatric cardiology with leadership experience
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, ability to listen and tailor information to specific audiences
  • Collegial, highly collaborative, and visible leadership with a proven track record of effectively managing a wide variety of people across a clinical, academic institute as well as individuals nationally and internationally
  • Track record of academic accomplishments suitable for appointment as Professor in the non-tenure track at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
  • Track record of fostering a positive and collaborative workplace culture and an inclusive leadership style that builds a team mentality.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Faculty Development: Recruits, develops, and retains extraordinary faculty. Conducts and/or oversees the yearly evaluation of faculty and ensures they are provided clarity on expectations and contributions. Leads thementorship and development of all assigned faculty, such as providing encouragement, counseling, and career building pathway opportunities with the goal of developing the maximum potential of each faculty member. Provides professional guidance through the review of data, abstracts, publications, and presentations. Demonstrates and assures professionalism amongst the faculty. Assures a strong positive culture across the faculty and adherence to the Cincinnati Children's mission.

Education and Training: Inspires selected faculty to develop top-notch and world-class training programs for fellows. Teaches and inspires medical students and residents to pursue training in cardiology. Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach within an academic setting, including supervision and review of medical education and training programs. Provides oversight of the recruitment of fellows, usually through the Director of the Fellowship Program. Provides oversight to assure the completion of divisional resident and student curricula. Assesses the quality of teaching by faculty, assuring professionalism and a positive culture. Responsible for planning, developing, administering, and evaluating the interdisciplinary professional education programs, with the clinical fellowship training director and other key stakeholders. May participate in continuing education programs for professionals, including hospital teaching rounds and lectures.

Clinical Care: Accountable for achieving and continually improving the best outcomes of all patients cared for within the institute. Committed to building clinical partnerships and growing clinical programs with a focus on having the best Midwest comprehensive pediatric cardiology center. Drives innovation in clinical care, care models, best patient experience. Drives value-based care. Transparently shares results and strives for continuous improvement. Assure safety and quality in all patient care. May partner with a clinical director in achieving clinical quality goals. Promotes team interactions across divisions and with Patient Services. Monitors and ensures clinical performance of staff. Monitors patient outcomes and continually seeks improvements. Monitors patient service and satisfaction developing opportunities for improvement. Determines the needs and develops the necessary programs or affiliations to offer family centered, community based, coordinated, comprehensive, and culturally competent care. May participate in the interdisciplinary evaluation of patients and serve as a consultant within the department, medical center, and community.

Research: Responsible for maintaining, expanding, and innovating research programs across The Heart Institute to empower our faculty and trainees to become world leaders in research and discovery of new treatment paradigms.Oversees research activities of the assigned clinical areas. May work in partnership with a director of research.Prepares and submits grant and contract applications alone and/or in collaboration with appropriate staff and faculty. Motivates and trains others in techniques of successful grantsmanship. Encourages and monitors faculty research productivity in developing their individual academic career goals. Provides review of data and publications, ensuring professionalism and integrity in all research activities. Plans, develops, designs, and conducts research/demonstration projects, both individually and in collaboration with staff/faculty and/or university faculty for publication in literature.

Advocacy: Advocates for the cardiovascular wellness of children to achieve their full potential with program expansion and refinement for community outreach with reduction in health care disparities. Serves as an effective legislative and policy advocate on behalf of the medical center. Develops all aspects and constituents of broad-based clinical and research network, both regionally and nationally. Serves as a strong advocate for clinical and research faculty.

Strategic Mission: Ensures the superior performance of the Heart Institute and the Division of Cardiology in all clinical and academic research activities. At the same time, effectively interacts with other programs, divisions, centers, and institutes to develop interdisciplinary programs that align with the entire organization's strategic mission. Support the recruitment and retention of the very best faculty and trainees to effectively grow critical programs and initiatives to achieve both the missions of the Heart Institute and organization. Develops, leads, and encourages innovative clinical and research programs with the goal of becoming the number one pediatric cardiology program in the nation.

Administration: Effectively supervises and leads all assigned faculty and staff. Ensures that job requirements and goals are clear to faculty and staff. Manages the selection, development, motivation, appraisal, and discipline of personnel Oversees and monitors faculty productivity. Develops an effective leadership team that can work with the director in making collaborative decisions. Maintains a positive workplace culture that attracts, retains, and motivates staff and-where appropriate-also empowers their ability to impact decision making. Assesses, develops, implements, and maintains appropriate departmental policies, procedures, job descriptions and philosophies as consistent with Cincinnati Children's policies and values. Works in partnership with a business director to plan, evaluate, and manage annual fiscal operating budgets. Oversees the fiscal analysis and monitors financial performance within the Heart Institute and the Division of Cardiology. Serves on Cincinnati Children's committees and working groups, and where important to our mission serves on committees within the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Develops a vision and plan for succession.

Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with all medical center policies and applicable state and federal regulations. Oversees clinical and research quality and compliance initiatives. Partners effectively with internal departments and external agencies. Ensures compliance with all medical staff guidelines.
