Discover Your Career at Emory University

Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Description

The Department of Radiation Oncology of the Emory University School of Medicine is recruiting a Vice Chair and Division Chief for the Division of Medical Physics at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level to lead the clinical, research, and teaching services for this large, complex, and esteemed Division.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to lead at the highest levels in both the academic and clinical operational aspects of the mission, including personal scholarly contributions that have led to academic distinction and impact, as well as experience with complex clinical operations. A demonstrated commitment to education and to elevating the quality and equity of care delivery are essential.

Candidates must have a PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree. ABR board certification in therapeutic radiological physics is expected. The candidate is expected to grow and support clinical services at multiple large sites, including a major proton center; education of medical physicist residents and medical residents; and the conduct of clinical and translational research with extramural funding support.

As a key administrative leader, the Vice Chair of Medical Physics is a vital member of the Department of Radiation Oncology's Senior Leadership committee. The successful candidate will utilize their abilities to recruit and retain the highest caliber medical physicist faculty to support the clinical, educational and research missions of the Department.

The Department of Radiation Oncology has a tripartite mission of providing outstanding patient and family-centered medical care, educating the next generation of cancer caregivers and researchers, and executing paradigm-defining cancer research. The department is growing in all three areas, is ranked 15th in NIH funding among U.S. radiation oncology departments, and currently has 56 faculty distributed among Divisions of Clinical Affairs, Cancer Biology and Medical Physics. Faculty members are nationally recognized for subspecialty care in areas including pediatric oncology, brain tumors, head and neck cancer, lymphoma, breast, genitourinary, and lung cancer. The department operates seven sites of care in the Atlanta area, including the Emory Proton Therapy center, and the new Winship Tower at Midtown opening in May 2023. With over 400,000 square feet of care space, the Winship Tower at Midtown will be centered on dedicated disease site-specific patient care communities, including 80 inpatient beds, 6 operating rooms, full imaging services, infusion, pharmacy and lab.

The department treats nearly 4,200 patients annually. Highlights of the technology offered include 9 Varian linear accelerators, 2 Elekta linear accelerators, Gamma Knife, Zeiss IntraBeam intraoperative unit, multiple brachytherapy HDR afterloader units, big bore CT scanners with 4D capabilities, MRI for simulation and access PET scanners. All linear accelerators are IGRT (2D, 3D) and respiratory motion management equipped. The Emory Proton Center houses a Varian ProBeam supporting 5 gantries. The oncology information system utilizes ARIA(r) with treatment planning systems to include Eclipse and RayStation.

Educational offerings overseen by the Vice Chair/Division Chief include the fully accredited three-year training program for medical physics residents, as well as physics training components of a four-year training program for radiation oncology residents. The Division also developed and maintains a University Certificate Program in Medical Physics as a two-year CAMPEP-accredited didactic training program. Emory physics faculty also participate in Georgia Institute of Technology's medical physics education and research programs.

The Medical Physics Division has a successful research program and has multiple investigators funded by NIH and DoD in image-guided radiotherapy, applications of artificial intelligence, novel applications of proton radiotherapy, and numerous productive collaborations with clinical and biology faculty within the department and beyond. Applicants who have research interests that complement or would significantly contribute to extending the overall departmental academic efforts are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is tenure eligible.
