Discover Your Career at Emory University

Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Description

Behavioral and mental health (BMH) is increasingly becoming one of the most pressing pediatric health issues in the U.S. At least one in five children and adolescents in the U.S. has a behavioral or mental health condition. Left untreated, these conditions limit a child's potential, and may even lead to death by suicide.

Recognizing the magnitude of this challenge, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has initiated an historic commitment to the behavioral and mental health of children throughout its health system. Alongside our community, Children's has developed a plan to support the mental health and development of the population of 1.5 million children in the metropolitan Atlanta area. The plan is about thinking big, starting small but moving quickly--all while scaling successful ideas and leveraging community partnerships to maximize impact.

Through the implementation of the comprehensive evidence base of clinical mental health care of children, the overarching goal is to reduce the rates of impairing psychiatric conditions of childhood, offset substance use and suicide risk among children and adolescents, and increase the proportion of children whose lives are characterized by resilience and wellbeing.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Children's) and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory are seeking a corps of 4 junior faculty child and adolescent psychiatrists to augment our existing multidisciplinary team of clinicians dedicated to behavioral and mental health, currently numbering over 100 professionals. The psychiatrists will lead and participate in care delivered by trans disciplinary teams including psychologists, social work care coordinators, therapists, behavior analysts, and other medical specialists. Children's is committed to deliver care equitably, regardless of payor source. New clinical programs associated with these positions are endowed in order to subsidize necessary costs of delivering and sustaining the highest-quality care.

  • The Behavioral and Mental Health services for which the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist will be responsible include outpatient (in-person and/or telehealth) psychiatric evaluation, intervention planning, and the delivery of evidence-based components of child mental health care, with opportunities to allocate portions of effort to any one of a number of existing specialized services such as inpatient consultation, emergency psychiatry, substance use disorders treatment or two-generation psychiatric care.
  • The range of patient conditions we intend to cover with high priority include, but are not limited to:
    • Recovery of adolescents in crisis
    • Evaluation and comprehensive treatment of young children with early psychiatric syndromes
    • Referral populations that will benefit from implementation of evidence based, cross disciplinary treatment approaches
    • Patients at risk for enduring mental health conditions across the wide spectrum of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, serious persistent mental illness, post-traumatic stress, and specialized mental health needs of LGBTQ youth and youth in foster care
  • Our clinical environment currently features an experienced group of mid-career child and adolescent psychiatrists, as well as unlimited opportunity to collaborate with clinician scientistsin the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, in its Division of Child and Adolescent psychiatry, as well as those in the Department of Pediatrics.
  • The academic home for these faculty positions will be Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical responsibilities for 47 weeks/year.
  • Clinical Outpatient: a minimum of 4 days per week and 1 day of indirect patient care or program development and/or academic activities.
  • Once a month participation in weekend call from home, consisting of occasional telehealth responsibility and clinical guidance to on call Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners.
  • Clinical care includes evaluation and comprehensive intervention planning, oversight of case management for patients, leadership of clinical teams, and supervision of trainees.
  • Clinics to be held at outpatient sites of the Behavioral and Mental Health Division and related facilities of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
  • Participation in a model of care that is organized according to the needs of children and families, and is seamlessly coordinated with internal and community-based professionals comprising the relevant constellation of services across the specialties of psychiatry, psychology social work and other disciplines. A standard of every aspect of clinical service expansion is that care will be delivered equitably (representative of the population and without regard to payor source) to the children of metropolitan Atlanta and by extension, the state of Georgia.
  • Participation in Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Children's Care Network Activities (e.g. quality forum, QI initiatives) that are required for quality assurance and to remain a member in good standing.
  • Demonstrate a pattern of excellence in clinical care.
  • Education of pre-doctoral interns, post-doctoral fellows, medical residents, and students in child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, medicine and other health-related professions during usual conduct of care.
  • Participation at team conferences and meetings
