Occ Summary
The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of theinterdisciplinary healthcare team in providing directpatient care. TheMedical Assistant, Certified performs routine adm inistrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment ofpatients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.
Work Performed
Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes me dical histories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients,and preparespatients for examinationsand procedures.Patient c are support responsibilities may include assisting the medicaland nursin g staffduring examination and procedures, collecting andpreparing labora tory specimens, performing basic laboratory test in theclinic/office, ta king electrocardiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educ ationalcontent and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenti ng inthe patient record.Otherclinical support responsibilities include d isposing ofcontaminated supplies, instrument processing, high level disi nfectionand sterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescripti ons to apharmacy, preparing and administering medications as directed by aphysician, and authorizing drug refills as directed. Performs othercli nicalfunctions as delegated and supervised by thephysician.Administrati ve responsibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers telephones, schedul es appointments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout p atients, andreferral scheduling; arranges for hospital admissions and la boratoryservices, updates and files patient medical records, fills out i nsuranceforms, handles billing, bookkeeping to include receiving copays andcollections on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinica landclerical supplies and forms. Performs other administrative duties as direcCommission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program. Exception: Registered nurses hired between July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within seven years of their start date. Registered nurses hired beforeJuly 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.
Experience
Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required. At a manager's discretion, employees with 6 months of experience who are exceptional performers may be eligible for this level. CN Is are eligible for promotion to CN II by meeting criteria set forth by the DUHS Vizient Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire. Promotions can occur at 12 months of hire,but no later than 18 months of hire.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.
